Visit of a BIOGAS Journal journalist to the IMA Polska plant
In May 2024, we hosted Mr Dierk Jensen at our production facility in Murowana Goślina. During the visit, we demonstrated to the German journalist how production can be effectively combined bioethanol with the possibility of using process residues in biogas plants. This approach fits in with the closed-loop economy model that underpins our development strategy.
We also presented our plans for the development of the biomethane sector at IMA Poland. The company is actively looking to diversify its operations and exploit synergies between bioethanol production and biogas generation. Residues from the bioethanol production process, such as distillery decoction, provide an excellent substrate for agricultural biogas plants.
Potential and barriers to the Polish biomethane market
An article published in BIOGAS Journal provides a comprehensive analysis of the Polish biomethane market. Referring to interviews conducted during his stay in Poland, Dierk Jensen describes both the huge potential of our country and the barriers hampering the development of the sector. Poland has significant agricultural biomass resources that could be used for large-scale biomethane production.
Among the main barriers to the development of the biomethane market in Poland, the journalist mentions underdeveloped transmission infrastructure, lack of stable support mechanisms and complicated administrative procedures. These factors mean that despite the availability of technology and raw materials, the rate of development of the sector remains slower than in Western European countries.
Biomethane as the fuel of the future
From the perspective of many experts, biomethane is considered the fuel of the future. It could play a key role in the decarbonisation of three sectors of the economy: heating, transport and industry. Unlike other renewable energy sources, biomethane can be stored and transmitted through the existing gas infrastructure, making it a particularly attractive solution.
Biomethane production technology is now fully mature and proven in practice. Installations for biogas purification and injection of biomethane into the grid are operating successfully in many European countries, including Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Now it is time for the Polish market, infrastructure and regulations to catch up with what is already technically feasible.
Bioethanol and biogas synergy at IMA Polska
Our company has been developing competences in the area of biofuels for years. Production bioethanol at the Murowana Goślina plant generates by-products that are a valuable raw material for biogas plants. The distillery decoction, rich in organic matter, can be used as a substrate for biogas production, which can then be upgraded to biomethane.
This approach maximises the use of raw materials and minimises waste. This fits in with the assumptions of a closed loop economy and supports climate goals related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. IMA Polska is actively analysing investment opportunities in this area, while keeping track of regulatory changes in the Polish market.
Biomethane Congress in Poznan
The Biomethane Congress organised by Biomass Magazine in Poznan brought together representatives of the biogas industry from Poland and abroad. The event provided a platform to share experiences and discuss the future of the sector. The presence of journalists from foreign trade media, such as BIOGAS Journal, testifies to the growing interest in the Polish biomethane market internationally.
During the congress, issues related to infrastructure development, support mechanisms and the prospects for growth of biomethane production in Poland were discussed. Experts emphasised that our country has the opportunity to become one of the leaders in biomethane production in Central and Eastern Europe, provided that an appropriate regulatory framework is created.
Prospects for the biomethane market in Poland
The Polish biomethane market is at an early stage of development, but forecasts are optimistic. Rising natural gas prices, pressure to decarbonise the economy and the availability of biomass feedstocks are creating favourable conditions for investment in this sector. However, the key will be the introduction of stable support mechanisms and the simplification of administrative procedures.
