    Denatured ethanol

Denatured ethanol - industrial alcohol exempt from excise duty

Denatured ethanol (denatured ethanol) is ethanol that has been denatured in accordance with EU or national regulations, making it unsuitable for consumption and qualifying for exemption from excise duty. IMA Polska offers denatured ethanol in concentrations ranging from 92% to 99.9% vol. produced from grain raw materials and processed at its own tax warehouse.

    What is denatured ethanol?

Denatured ethanol is ethyl alcohol (CAS 64-17-5) to which approved denaturants (denaturants) have been added. Denaturation alters the organoleptic properties of ethanol - giving it an unpleasant taste or odour - without significantly affecting the physicochemical properties relevant to industrial applications. The product remains a colourless, clear liquid of high purity.

    Types of ethyl alcohol contamination

Polish and EU regulations distinguish two main types of contamination:

Type of contaminationLegal basisScope of the exemptionTypical applications
Total (Euroscaling)Regulation (EC) No 3199/93EU-wide exemption from excise dutySolvents, household chemicals, windscreen washer liquids
Partial (national)Ordinance of the Minister of FinanceExemption in Poland for certain productsCosmetics, biocides, pharmaceutical products

Euroscaling - a common EU procedure

Standard Eurosol mixture (per 100 litres of ethanol):

    • 1 litre isopropyl alcohol (IPA)
    • 1 litre Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)
    • 1 gram of denatonium benzoate (Bitrex)

Ethanol fully denatured according to this recipe can be freely moved and sold throughout the European Union without excise duty.

    Partial contamination - national procedures

In the case of partial contamination, the choice of contaminant depends on the intended use of the end product:

    TaintEnd use
    Isopropyl alcohol (IPA)Cosmetics, disinfectants, biocides
Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)Solvents, thinners, paint industry
Bitrex (denatonium benzoate)Additive for all types of blemishes - imparts an extremely bitter taste
    Tert-butyl alcoholTechnical products, fuels
    Diethyl phthalateCosmetics industry
    Ethyl acetateSolvents, paints
    Benzyl alcoholCosmetics, pharmacy

    Frequently asked questions

Denatured (denatured) alcohol is ethanol with substances added to prevent consumption. Denaturation allows excise duty exemption and legal use of alcohol in industry - cosmetics, household chemicals, solvents, paints and varnishes.

Yes - we carry out service alcohol denaturing with full process documentation and parameter repeatability according to customer requirements.

On offer are the European method (Euro-denaturation), IPA contamination, MEK contamination, Bitrex contamination, tert-butanol, diethyl phthalate, ethyl acetate and benzyl alcohol. Selection depends on the intended use and formal requirements.

The difference comes down to the chosen method of contamination and the final destination of the ethanol. Only eurosknife (1L IPA + 1L MEK + 1g Bitrex per 100L ethanol), allows for excise duty exemption throughout the European Union. It is always advisable to base the choice of variant on the target country and the destination of the end product.

Yes, denatured ethyl alcohol is subject to notification in the SENT (System for Electronic Surveillance of Transport) system in accordance with the Act of 9 March 2017. The obligation applies to products containing more than 50% by volume of denatured ethyl alcohol when the weight of the consignment exceeds 500 kg or the volume exceeds 500 litres. Transport in small unit packages (a few litres) may be exempted from monitoring. IMA Polska, as a producer, provides full documentation enabling proper declaration of transport by a consignee or a carrier on the PUESC platform.

Each batch is delivered with a quality certificate, safety data sheet (MSDS), technical specification (TDS) and documentation confirming the type and quantity of contaminant used (contamination protocol) - required by customs and tax authorities.

Denatured alcohol is used in the production of: household chemicals, washer liquids, solvents, paints and varnishes, adhesives, disinfectants, cosmetics and in the printing and automotive industries.

Ima Poland also distributes isopropanol (IPA), a key ingredient in partial contamination (cosmetics, biocides) and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) - EU total contamination component.
