8th Biomethane Congress in Poznań - IMA Poland on the future of the sector

IMA Poland participated in the 8th Biomethane Congress in Poznan, one of the most important industry events dedicated to the development of the biomethane market in Poland. Our presence at the congress was driven by our conviction that biomethane is a key component of the country's energy transition and requires urgent action at the legislative and investment level.

Biomethane in Poland - huge potential, zero production

The current situation of the biomethane market in Poland is paradoxical. Despite the huge production potential, the amount of biomethane fed into the gas grid is exactly zero. This state of affairs is due to the lack of appropriate legal regulations and investment support mechanisms that would enable the first industrial-scale production facilities to come on stream.

Poland has significant substrate resources for biogas and biomethane production. Agricultural waste, residues from the food industry and sewage sludge can provide the raw material base for hundreds of biogas facilities. However, without a clear legal framework and a stable support system, investors are not willing to take the financial risk associated with the construction of such facilities.

Urgent legislative changes as a prerequisite for development

During the 8th Biomethane Congress in Poznań, industry representatives unanimously stressed the need for urgent changes to the law. The key demands mainly concern the creation of a system of investment support for biomethane producers and the establishment of clear rules for introducing this fuel into the gas network.

Producers and investors need predictable operating conditions. Long-term contracts, repurchase guarantees and transparent connection procedures are the building blocks needed to trigger investment in the biomethane sector. Without these foundations, even the most advanced technologies will remain untapped.

The role of biomethane in the energy transition

Biomethane represents one of the most promising solutions in the context of decarbonising the gas sector. Unlike natural gas, biomethane is a renewable fuel whose combustion does not increase the carbon balance in the atmosphere. It can be used in existing gas infrastructure without the need for upgrades.

Western European countries have been developing the biomethane sector for years. Germany, France and Denmark have hundreds of installations producing biomethane for the gas grid and transport. Poland, despite favourable conditions, lags far behind the European leaders.

IMA Polska supports the development of renewable energy sources

As a company operating in the sector bioethanol and renewable fuels, IMA Polska is following the development of the biomethane market with interest. Both industries share the common goal of replacing fossil fuels with renewable alternatives produced from biomass.

Our experience in the production and distribution of bioethanol shows that the biofuel sector can develop dynamically with the right regulatory support. Similar mechanisms could accelerate the development of the biomethane market in Poland.

Prospects for the future

Participants at the 8th Biomethane Congress in Poznań expressed the hope that the next edition of the event would already bring the first concrete successes. The commissioning of the first biomethane plants on an industrial scale would be a breakthrough for the entire sector.

IMA Poland will continue to actively participate in the debate on the future of renewable energy sources in Poland. We believe that cooperation between industry, public administration and academia can bring tangible results in the development of the domestic biomethane market.
